Wispr Flow is probably the best-known AI dictation app right now, and it deserves the reputation: it is fast, polished and works across platforms. Murmur plays in the same category with one fundamental difference in architecture. Wispr Flow processes your speech in the cloud. Murmur never lets it leave your Mac.
That single difference explains almost everything else about the two apps, so let's start there.
The architecture question
When you dictate with Wispr Flow, your audio is streamed to servers, transcribed and cleaned up there, then sent back as text. That gives Wispr real advantages: heavyweight models, cross-platform support (macOS, Windows, iOS) and consistent quality on any hardware.
Murmur takes the opposite bet. Transcription uses Apple's on-device speech recognition, and the professional rewrite runs on Apple Intelligence, locally. Unplug your network cable mid-sentence and nothing changes. There is no server to reach, because there is no server.
Neither approach is wrong. They serve different people.

Where Wispr Flow wins
Honesty first. If you live across a Mac, a Windows machine and an iPhone, Wispr Flow follows you everywhere and Murmur does not. Its cloud models are also strong on heavy accents and noisy environments, and the free tier lets you evaluate the product before paying.
Where Murmur wins
Privacy is structural, not contractual. Wispr Flow's privacy depends on a policy. Murmur's depends on physics: audio that never leaves the machine cannot be retained, subpoenaed or leaked.
Free means free. Murmur has no word quota, no pro tier, no upsell. It runs on hardware you already own, so there is nothing for us to meter.
Latency has no network in it. Your words land in the active app about a second after you release the hotkey, with no round-trip variance on hotel Wi-Fi.
Translation is built into the same gesture. Speak French, watch clean English land in Slack. No extra step.
The bottom line
Choose Wispr Flow if you need Windows or iOS, or if you dictate in very rough audio conditions and want cloud-grade correction. Choose Murmur if your work happens on a Mac and you'd rather your voice, and your unsent thoughts, stayed there. It costs nothing to find out.
