Murmur vs Apple's built-in dictation: what the extra layer adds

Fair question: macOS already ships with dictation, it's on-device for most languages, and it's free. Why install anything? We build on the same Apple speech stack, so we'll answer it without pretending the built-in option is bad. It isn't. It's just the raw material, not the finished product.
What Apple gives everyone
Press the dictation key and macOS transcribes your speech locally, with automatic punctuation, in a good set of languages. For short bursts of literal transcription into a text field you already clicked, it's perfectly serviceable. Murmur uses this same foundation, which is exactly why we know where it stops.
What it doesn't do
Built-in dictation types what you said. But what you said is rarely what you meant to write. It keeps your "euh", your false starts, your rambling sentence order. It won't shift register for the app you're in, won't translate, and the flow itself is modal: you place your cursor, invoke dictation, watch words appear literally, then clean everything up by hand.

The honest case for stock dictation
If you dictate rarely, in one language, and don't mind editing afterwards, the built-in feature costs you nothing and installs nothing. That's a legitimate answer, and if it describes you, close this tab with our blessing.
The case for the extra 2 MB
Murmur turns dictation from transcription into writing. Hold the hotkey, speak the messy version, release: the sentence that lands in Mail is the one you would have typed on a good day, professional tone included. Speak French into an English conversation and the translation happens in the same second. The pill lives around your notch, works in every app where a cursor blinks, and refuses password fields on principle.
Same Apple foundations, same privacy, same price. The difference is the layer on top: about a second of Apple Intelligence between your voice and your text.
The bottom line
Keep the built-in dictation for what it is: a solid, free transcriber. Add Murmur when you want the version of your words you'd actually send. Since both are free and both stay on your Mac, the comparison costs nothing to run yourself.
